Project Outcomes
The project was funded by the Australian Greenhouse Office, the Victorian State Government and the City of Melbourne. The existing building is to be refurbished for the Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB). As a signature building, the new refurbishment was designed to demonstrate the potential low energy concepts which could be employed in buildings throughout China.
Bassett Applied Research provided bioclimatic concept design services for this low energy Green building located in Tianjin PRC. The service included undertaking a design workshop in Tianjin for the period of a week which culminated in developing a concept design complete with cost estimate, sketches, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission estimate.
Specific Activities
Initiatives provided in the building included:
- Displacement ventilation.
- Aquifer cooling and heating.
- ETFE lightweight double facade.
- Acoustic wall breathable wall.
- Winter gardens.
- Rainwater harvesting
- Bio wall
The concept employs a true automatic mixed mode displacement air conditioning system to serve the office area and buoyancy driven natural ventilation through the solar chimneys.
