Project Outcomes
Bassett Applied Research provided bioclimatic design and modelling services for this low energy library and IT facility. The system employs a true automatic mixed mode displacement air conditioning system to serve the library area and controlled night cooling and buoyancy driven natural ventilation for the lower floor lecture rooms. Energy and thermal modelling provided optimisation of the building materials and plant operational strategy.

Bassett Applied Research developed a low energy design solution which incorporated a variety of innovative concepts.? These included displacement ventilation without a raised floor, radiant slab cooling to non air conditioned spaces, pre-cooling of outdoor air using thermal mass and microclimates and by using a mixed mode air conditioning strategy.
Specific Activities
Initiatives provided in the building included:
- Displacement ventilation to the first floor library.
- High efficiency gas fired condensing boilers serving perimeter fin tube convectors.
- Low energy ceiling fans operating through BMS Control to operate in winter heating mode only.
- Buoyancy driven natural ventilation serving the ground floor lecture theatres.
- Motorised control facade dampers providing true automatic mixed mode ventilation.
Value for Client
The final design concept was modelled by BAR to demonstrate a significant 40% reduction in annual air conditioning energy consumption. The use of thermal mass for radiant slab cooling and pre-cooling of outdoor air provided both improved comfort conditions and reduced plant capacity resulting in capital cost savings. BAR carried out extensive 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling to demonstrate the effectiveness of both the natural ventilation and displacement ventilation designs. Through extensive modelling of the buildings environmental concepts BAR was able to propose risk free innovative solutions to meet the Client's needs. The Illawarra TAFE won the bronze medal at the 2003 Francis Greenway Awards for green building design. BAR was commissioned to undertake full monitoring of the building when completed in 2004 to demonstrate the true effectiveness of the facility.
