Client Needs
The redevelopment of the State Library of SA comprised the total redevelopment of this 20,000 m2 facility, comprising the main Spence Wing and heritage-listed Institute and Jervois buildings. The Spence Wing basement contained the central thermal plant which also serves the adjacent arts precinct buildings, including the South Australian Museum. Our client required minimum disruption to the operation of these arts precinct buildings.

Bassett Solution
Through detailed planning of the staged relocation and upgrade of the central thermal plant, along with an intricate decanting and reloading programme, we ensured the Library remained operational throughout the project.

This project saw South Australia’s first major application of active chilled beam and induction technology, including archival areas delivering a highly stable thermal environment at low energy. Remote computerised building management system for on-line remote control, monitoring and analysis functions, interfacing with Information Technology specialists to deliver state of the art systems within a budget of $4M. Bassett’s fire engineering solutions delivered construction cost savings of approximately $400k.
