Client Needs
To provide a major new state-of-the-art research facility to house 700 researchers located on the site of the existing Cunningham Laboratory on the University of Queensland St Lucia Campus, Brisbane. The building complex accommodates the University of Queensland's (UQ) new Institute of Molecular Bioscience (IMB) and divisions of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) including Tropical Agriculture, Plant Industries and Health Sciences and Nutrition

The building includes;

  • specialist laboratory areas including PC2 and PC3, Chemistry, Vivarium and Vivarium SPF.
  • specialist equipment facilities including NMR, Mass Spectrometers and Electron Microscopes.
  • library, seminar rooms and auditorium, computer rooms, laboratory support offices, general offices, wash up areas and glasshouse.

Bassett Solution
Bassett was responsible for the design and documentation of the Electrical, Telecommunications, Security and Fire Services for this development which is Australia's largest research facility dedicated to human, animal and plant biotechnological research.

Value for Client
A key feature of the building is what has become known as the "Generic Laboratory Floor Plate", as a flexible envelope in which the key elements and services could be configured in a number of ways and to easily accommodate future moves and changes. Over 30 alternatives were considered before the client team signed off the preferred option.
