Client Needs
To create a world-class research facility and infrastructure to support the Australian Synchrotron. The building is purpose built to accommodate the synchrotron machine, associated laboratories and technical facilities.
Bassett Solution
Bassett were engaged to provide all engineering services and acoustics for this feature project. Bassett worked as part of the Thiess team to develop a design which focused primarily on the functional needs of the synchrotron, without compromising on the need for architectural form whilst working within a tight project budget.
Value for Client
Bassett commenced their research into synchrotron facilities by visiting existing synchrotron facilities in Switzerland and Germany. The detailed knowledge gained from researching existing facilities allowed Bassett with the Thiess team to optimise their design to achieve maximum functionality and cost effectiveness. Bassett were also in a position to interact constructively with Major Projects Victoria, having gained a solid understanding of the critical factors in synchrotron facility design and operation.
The building was delivered by the Thiess team in February 2005. Synchrotron technology fit-out will continue until the opening in 2007.
Project value was approximately $200m. Building component was approximately $40m.
