Client Needs
The largest public hospital project ever undertaken in Victoria. This $400M project also included relocation of the Mercy Public Hospital from East Melbourne to the Austin site. New buildings of approximately 50,000sqm, plus 20,000 sqm of refurbishments and site infrastructure upgrades and a separate mental health facility.

Bassett Solution

  • Bassett applied detailed knowledge of all hospital departments and current best practice to design the new Austin and Mercy Hospital buildings
  • Infrastructure systems for the project were addressed on a “whole of site” basis to achieve cost effective and reliable solutions
  • Systems were designed to be constructed in sub-optimal floor to floor heights to match up with existing buildings
  • New buildings and refurbishments were designed to allow staging and assure continuity of health service delivery
  • Detailed analysis and work shopping with stakeholders was undertaken to ensure safe, reliable and risk managed
  • All solutions were value managed and achieved within budgets

Bassett worked closely with the appointed energy and ESD auditor to achieve a new benchmark in environmental sustainability and low energy consumption. We have addressed all aspects of energy consumption and cost-effectively reduced the base case energy consumption in hospitals by around 30%.
